To pay an excessively high price for something, often unwillingly or under duress.
Origin
During the brutal Danish rule of Ireland in the 9th century, a cruel tax was imposed upon the populace. Those unable to afford the exorbitant sums faced a gruesome penalty: their noses would be slit as a public mark of their delinquency and a permanent reminder of their unpaid debt. This literal and agonizing act of 'paying through the nose' became a chilling symbol of enforced, ruinous payment. While the practice mercifully faded, the phrase endured, capturing the essence of being forced to hand over an outrageous price for something, long after the physical violence had vanished.
