The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Yobbo

Meaning

A rude, aggressive, and often uneducated young man, typically of a lower social class.

Origin

The word "yobbo" first emerged in late 19th-century Britain as a slang term, almost certainly a playful inversion of the word "boy" – a technique known as "back-slang" popular in Victorian street language. Much like "ecilop" for "police," turning "boy" into "yob" created a slightly rebellious, insider feel. This initial "yob" then gained the diminutive, almost contemptuous suffix "-bo," cementing its meaning as a derogatory term for a crude, often unruly young man. It quickly spread to Australia, where it became equally ingrained in the vernacular to describe a boorish and aggressive individual, carrying echoes of its working-class, street-slang roots.

Examples
