The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Sybarite

Meaning

A person devoted to luxury, pleasure, and sensual enjoyment.

Origin

The term "Sybarite" hails from Sybaris, an ancient Greek city in Magna Graecia, founded around 720 BC in what is now southern Italy. Sybaris was legendary for its extraordinary wealth and the incredibly lavish, pleasure-seeking lifestyle of its citizens. Tales of their extravagance spread far and wide: they supposedly trained their horses to dance, banned noisy professions from the city, and even had channels to deliver wine directly to their homes. One famous anecdote claims a Sybarite once complained he couldn't sleep because a rose petal on his bed was wrinkled. Their opulent way of life became synonymous with luxury and indulgence, cementing "Sybarite" as a descriptor for anyone devoted to sensual pleasures, long after Sybaris was utterly destroyed by its rival Croton in 510 BC.
