Putz
Meaning
A foolish, contemptible, or ineffectual person.
Origin
The word "putz" originates from the Yiddish "potz" (פּאָץ), a vulgar term for the male genitalia, akin to the English "dick." As Jewish immigrants brought the word into American English, particularly during the 20th century, its meaning softened considerably from its crude anatomical root. It evolved into a less offensive, yet still disparaging, epithet. The term then became a common, albeit informal, way to describe someone foolish, inept, or simply annoying, shedding its explicit vulgarity while retaining a clear sense of worthlessness or idiocy.
Examples
- Don't be such a putz; just get the job done right this time.
- I can't believe that putz forgot to lock the front door again.
