Hoosegow
Meaning
A hoosegow is an informal term for a jail or prison.
Origin
Hoosegow swaggered into American English, primarily in the Wild West of the late 19th century, a direct descendant of the Spanish word "juzgado." This wasn't just any Spanish word; "juzgado" specifically meant a courtroom or tribunal, often referring to the building itself. As American cowboys, prospectors, and settlers expanded into areas with significant Spanish-speaking populations, they adopted the term, twisting its pronunciation to the more familiar "hoosegow." It soon became a vivid, informal synonym for the local jail, a place where many a cowboy found themselves after a rowdy night or a misunderstanding with the law.
Examples
