Origin

The word "hedonist" springs directly from the ancient Greek concept of hēdonē, meaning "pleasure." For philosophers like Aristippus of Cyrene, living around the 4th century BCE, the pursuit of immediate sensory gratification was the highest good, the very purpose of existence. He believed that pleasure was the only intrinsically good thing, and pain the only intrinsically bad. This direct, often unbridled, embrace of joy and delight became the defining characteristic of a hedonist, forever linking the word to those who make pleasure their life's guiding star.
