Up against it
Meaning
To be facing severe difficulties, opposition, or a challenging situation with limited resources or options.
Origin
Imagine an early 19th-century scene: a desperate brawl, a hunted animal trapped, or perhaps even a ship caught in a storm, pressed directly "up against" a treacherous coast. The literal image is one of being physically hemmed in, with little room to maneuver, often facing an insurmountable obstacle directly. This visceral sense of being cornered, with no easy escape and a direct confrontation with a formidable force, quickly transitioned from a physical predicament to a metaphorical one, encapsulating any situation where one faces immense difficulty or opposition without an easy way out.
