tweak out
Meaning
To become extremely agitated, anxious, or overwhelmed, often due to stress, lack of sleep, or stimulant use.
Origin
The word 'tweak' itself has a long history, meaning to make a small adjustment or to pinch sharply. But the vivid, frantic energy of 'tweak out' emerged from a much darker corner: the American drug subculture of the late 20th century. As stimulant use, particularly methamphetamine, surged, observers coined the phrase to describe the intense, agitated, often paranoid state exhibited by users. Their nervous energy, repetitive movements, and inability to settle down were the physical manifestations of 'tweaking.' The addition of 'out' amplified this to a complete, overwhelming loss of control, painting a stark picture of someone pushed to their mental and physical limits. It soon escaped the confines of drug slang, becoming a potent, informal term for anyone experiencing extreme anxiety, stress, or sensory overload.
