Origin

The phrase "turn up the volume" came into common usage with the widespread adoption of electronic audio devices in the 20th century. Before radios, phonographs, and televisions became household staples, sound was primarily acoustic, its intensity fixed by its source. But as amplifiers and speakers brought recorded and broadcast sound to the masses, physical knobs and dials offered users unprecedented control. These controls, often simply labeled "volume," would increase the sound's power output when rotated. The physical act of turning a dial "up" to achieve greater loudness perfectly encapsulated the desired effect, embedding this command firmly into our everyday language.
