The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Tripe

Meaning

Worthless or nonsensical talk or writing.

Origin

Tripe, in its most literal sense, refers to the edible stomach lining of various ruminant animals, especially cattle. For centuries, this was considered a humble and inexpensive cut of meat, a staple for the poorer classes and often viewed with a certain disdain by the more affluent. This culinary association with something cheap, unrefined, and of low quality eventually made a linguistic leap. By the 19th century, the term had fully evolved to describe anything utterly worthless, nonsensical, or of extremely poor quality, particularly in reference to written or spoken words. The phrase, therefore, is a culinary insult repurposed, suggesting that someone's words are as unappetizing and unpalatable as the least desirable part of an animal.
