To have the Midas touch
Meaning
To be exceptionally successful in every venture, particularly in generating wealth or profit.
Origin
In ancient Greek mythology, King Midas of Phrygia was granted a single wish by the god Dionysus after Midas showed kindness to Silenus, Dionysus's companion. Midas, with a heart set on endless riches, wished that everything he touched would turn to gold. His wish was granted, and initially, he reveled in his newfound power, turning roses and stones into gleaming treasures. But soon, the blessing became a curse: his food, his drink, and even his beloved daughter turned to inert gold with a single touch. Realizing the horror of his gift, Midas desperately pleaded with Dionysus to take back the power. The god instructed him to wash in the river Pactolus, which cleansed him of his golden touch and, legend says, left gold dust in its waters. The phrase, stripped of its tragic irony, has come to signify an uncanny ability to create success and wealth effortlessly.
