The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

To be voiceless

Meaning

To be unable to express one's opinions or have one's concerns heard, often due to a lack of power or representation.

Origin

The concept of 'voicelessness' began, quite literally, with the physical inability to speak. For millennia, humans understood what it meant to be rendered mute by illness, injury, or congenital conditions—a profound silence. But as societies grew more complex, another, more insidious form of voicelessness emerged. People, fully capable of speech, found themselves silenced by social structures, by oppression, or by a lack of power that rendered their words utterly without weight. This phrase, therefore, evolved to describe not just the absence of sound, but the absence of agency, influence, and representation—a state where one's thoughts and needs, however loudly spoken, simply do not register with those who hold power.

Examples
