Origin
Imagine a time when every piece of digital data lived on your physical computer, or on a clunky server rack in your office. It was tangible, but also incredibly limiting. Then, a powerful idea emerged: what if we could move all that heavy lifting—the storage, the processing, the software—off your device and onto a vast, unseen network of machines? Early network engineers in the late 20th and early 21st centuries often drew diagrams where the internet itself, with its mysterious, interconnected servers, was depicted as a simple, fluffy cloud shape. This abstract drawing, signifying 'the internet out there,' eventually solidified into a concrete concept. It wasn't just a diagram anymore; it was the promise of limitless, on-demand computing power, a digital utility available to everyone, and the name stuck: 'the cloud.'
