The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Not grounded

Meaning

Lacking a practical basis, a realistic understanding of a situation, or a solid foundation in reality.

Origin

The concept of "grounding" has deep roots, literally tying something to the earth for stability or safety. In electrical engineering, for example, "grounding" ensures a safe path for current, preventing dangerous surges and establishing a common reference point. An ungrounded system is unstable and potentially hazardous. This literal, physical need for a secure connection to the earth gradually extended its meaning. By the 20th century, "grounded" evolved to describe a person who is sensible and realistic, or an idea that is well-supported by evidence. To be "not grounded" thus became the perfect metaphorical shorthand for someone disconnected from reality, or an idea floating aimlessly without any factual or practical support—a dangerous state, much like an ungrounded electrical circuit.
