Get Out of Bed on the Wrong Side
Meaning
To be in a bad mood from the moment you wake up, often for no apparent reason.
Origin
Ancient Roman superstition dictated that it was unlucky to enter a house or get out of bed with the left foot first. The left side (sinister in Latin) was consistently associated with bad omens and ill fortune, a belief that permeated European folklore for centuries. To literally "get out of bed on the wrong side" meant to begin your day by inviting misfortune, an act believed to set a negative tone for everything that followed. This literal, superstitious act eventually transformed into our modern metaphorical expression for waking up in a foul mood, carrying the echoes of ancient anxieties into contemporary speech.
