The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

El Dorado

Meaning

A mythical place of great wealth and opportunity, or a highly sought-after but often unattainable goal.

Origin

The legend of El Dorado began in the misty highlands of what is now Colombia, specifically with the Muisca people. Their chief, a sacred figure, would perform a dazzling ritual: covered in gold dust from head to toe, he would paddle a raft out onto Lake Guatavita, offering precious golden artifacts and emeralds to the gods by casting them into the water. This gilded man, "El Hombre Dorado" or "El Dorado" (The Gilded One), ignited the imagination of Spanish conquistadors. Francisco Pizarro, Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, and Sir Walter Raleigh, among others, launched relentless and often brutal expeditions across the Amazon and the Andes, driven by the tantalizing whispers of a city of gold. They never found the mythical city they envisioned, but the legend of El Dorado, a place of unimaginable wealth, became etched into the Western imagination, transforming from a gilded man to a golden city and finally, to any unattainable dream of ultimate fortune.
