Chip in
Meaning
To contribute money, effort, or an item to a shared purpose or collective fund.
Origin
The concept of "chipping in" likely began in the smoky, high-stakes world of 19th-century American gambling parlors. Here, players would contribute small, uniform tokens—often actual chips made of wood or clay—to the central pot, signifying their stake in the game. To "chip in" was to physically toss your share of these tokens onto the table, joining the collective effort to build the prize. This vivid image of communal contribution from the card table eventually migrated beyond gambling dens, transforming into a universal expression for pooling resources, whether monetary or otherwise, for a common goal.
