Origin
While humanity has always spun tales, the specific phrase 'urban legend' emerged from scholarly circles in the mid-20th century. American folklorist Jan Harold Brunvand is often credited with popularizing the term, especially through his influential 1981 book, 'The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American Urban Legends and Their Meanings.' He noticed how these gripping, often bizarre stories—like alligators in sewers or ghostly figures on lonely roads—functioned like ancient myths but were set in contemporary, often city, environments. These weren't just rumors; they were narratives passed along as truth, shaping collective anxieties and beliefs. Brunvand effectively gave a name to a ubiquitous, modern form of folklore, allowing us to categorize and understand these persistent tales that weave through our daily lives, giving them academic legitimacy and a catchy label.
