The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

All your base are belong to us

Meaning

This phrase is a humorous declaration of complete victory or dominance, often used to mock an opponent's futile efforts.

Origin

The iconic phrase "All your base are belong to us" burst onto the global stage not from a military strategist, but from a badly translated Japanese video game. The culprit was the 1991 arcade game Zero Wing, specifically its European Mega Drive port released a decade later in 2001. In the game's opening cutscene, a villainous alien commander, CATS, delivers this grammatically fractured threat to the main character, "Captain". The line, along with other memorable malapropisms from the same scene, quickly became a cornerstone of early internet meme culture, embodying a triumphant, albeit grammatically incorrect, declaration of overwhelming victory and capture.

Examples
