Origin
Gold has always been a symbol of wealth and power, but throughout history, its purity has been constantly challenged by counterfeiters. To truly separate the genuine from the fake, a specific method emerged: the "acid test." This practice, particularly refined in the 19th century, involved applying a drop of nitric acid to an item suspected of being gold. If the metal was base (like copper or iron), the acid would vigorously react, dissolving the surface and leaving a discolored mark. But if it was pure gold, the metal would remain untouched, calmly resisting the corrosive bite of the acid. This definitive chemical reaction, which literally put the metal through a make-or-break trial, gave us the phrase "acid test," a powerful metaphor for any conclusive examination that reveals the ultimate truth or value of something.
