Origin
In the 19th century, as whaling ships returned with tales of the ocean's colossal creatures, the image of the whale became synonymous with immensity and awe-inspiring scale. People began to adopt "whale" as an intensifier, using it to describe anything exceptionally large or great. Thus, to have "a whale of a time" wasn't just to have fun, but to have an experience so overwhelmingly enjoyable and monumental, it could only be likened to the vast, impressive presence of the king of the sea.
