Origin
Imagine an old blacksmith, hammering away, creating a chain link by painstaking link. He knows instinctively that all his masterful work can be undone by just one imperfection. This ancient understanding, that a chain is only as strong as its weakest part, found its way into English proverbs, notably appearing in George Herbert’s Jacula Prudentum around 1651.
