Origin

The word "bonanza" originally sailed into English from the Spanish, where it meant "fair weather" or "calm sea." Mariners, often battling turbulent waters, would shout "¡Bonanza!" upon seeing a clear horizon—a literal blessing of calm. But the phrase truly struck gold during the frenetic 19th-century American mining booms, particularly with the discovery of the Comstock Lode in Nevada. Here, miners, often toiling in desperate conditions, adopted "bonanza" to describe a rich vein of ore—a sudden, massive strike that promised immense wealth and transformed fortunes overnight.
